UNICORN STORE (2017)

UNICORN STORE (2017)

Tagline: Everyone Needs a Little Magic. Even If They're All Grown Up.

(Comedy, Drama, A Surprising Lack Of Unicorns) [PG]

Note: This was not released theatrically but would have been rated PG.

In this one, a woman named Kit receives a message that basically tells her she’s gonna get a unicorn. Only in order to do that she basically has to prove herself worthy of one. Apparently, no one just gives away unicorns these days. What the cow?

As the film progresses the audience is introduced to Virgil who ends up helping Kit build a shed for the unicorn, but his increasingly skeptical attitude towards the whole thing brings a level of doubt as to whether or not Kit (played by the writer and director Brie Larson) is actually pretty much just getting burned by The Salesman (played by Samuel L. Jackson). Interestingly in real life, Jackson and Larson are pretty great friends and have actually been in 5 movies together. 4 of which I have done reviews for.  Kit’s parents are played by Bradley Whitford and Joan Cusak, both I think are trying their best to navigate Kit’s artistic adventures. In the film, however, they are portrayed very one-sidedly even when they are trying to help. The Salesman in this movie is played a LOT like Samuel L. Jackson took on the Octopus role in THE SPIRIT.

Woven into the film we do get the feeling that the writer must have hated his boss because Kit’s boss is basically coming on to her for the entire movie and ultimately that gets a bit weird. Having said that, it does absolutely nothing for the main focus of the film, or Kit’s character development, and instead seems like a plot device. We get it, to some, all white men are mindless gargoyles plotting the end of the world.

Having said all that I found this movie pretty exhilarating. Its richness along the lines of belief and promotion of creativity was pretty profound, and fun in a lot of ways. Kit’s attitude in the movie is hopeful and inspiring. Netflix is loaded with absolute garbage these days…. UNICORN STORE is one of the few diamonds in the rough.
