GODZILLA AND MOTHRA : THE BATTLE FOR EARTH (1992)

GODZILLA AND MOTHRA : THE BATTLE FOR EARTH (1992)

In this one a meteor lands and wakes up both Mothra and Battra in the process (Mothra by means of exposing her egg form from underneath a mountain). Meanwhile Godzilla is doing Godzilla stuff and he just isn’t having any of it. Battra looks like Mothra would if she just got done listening to death metal for about 50 years (and also somehow ended up with mustard for blood). We get the two tiny girls that sing to Mothra like half the damn movie so there’s that. The plot also goes into the fact that this little girl has a dad that is a thief. The little girl actually promises the two tiny women who sing to Mothra all the time that if Mothra saves them, her dad will get a real job.

Apparently Mothra, and not some other creature, was chosen for this movie because GODZILLA VS BIOLANTE was a bit of a flop. Mothra was actually choice two though. The first choice was King Ghidorah which was featured in a movie the prior year.

One cool thing about this movie is that it does feature one of the better under-water fight scenes in the Godzilla canon. It’s loaded with throwbacks to Indiana Jones (especially the opening sequence). I have no idea if anyone at TOHO will admit that, but it’s pretty obvious. I don’t have an issue with it. It’s just very different for a Godzilla movie.

Another thing I found interesting about this one was that they state in ancient times Mothra defeated Battra but when these two fight, you can’t see how that ever happened, until it gets revealed that Mothra’s got freakin lasers too? Did I miss something?

All throughout the TOHO Godzilla movies you can see strings on flying things, but in this movie and in GODZILLA VS MEGAGUIRUS it’s just rough as hell. The Godzilla design however is pretty fantastic in this and overall as a movie, it’s definitely somewhere in the top 15 or so. It also fortunately crushed it at the Japanese box office when it came out. I guess the other odd thing I learned from this is that Mothra can somehow fly in space. When the heck? Gotta give this one a 4 out of 7. In Godzilla lore, this one was pretty damn decent even if it made no sense at all.
