BUMBLEBEE (2018)

BUMBLEBEE (2018)

Tagline: Every Hero Has a Beginning

(Action, Adventure, VW) [PG-13]

They literally call themselves Decepticons. That doesn't set off any red flags?

When I first heard this was coming out as per usual I was pretty excited. I may be one of the few people left on the planet that actually enjoys this series for what it is (as badly as the timeline has been completely screwed with). Probably the only exception being THE LAST KNIGHT which barely earned a 3 out of 7 with me. I guess BUMBLEBEE is basically trying to say the entire TRANSFORMERS series never actually happened. If not, it is at least trying to say 1,2 probably 3, maybe 4, and definitely 5 didn’t happen. In THE LAST KNIGHT, it was pretty clear BUMBLEBEE fought the Nazis, but this film makes it seem like he’s never been to Earth before since at the beginning it looks like the Autobots just discovered earth in 1987. Secondly, Cybertron is in the middle of a huge war in 1987, but previously we were told happened thousands of years ago. We also have a scene at the end of BUMBLEBEE that pretty much is a finger to the rest of the franchise, but you will have to see it to find out about that, because I don’t want to give too much away here.

Travis Knight (not Micheal Bay) directs this one, but let’s be honest, Bay hasn’t abandoned ship. After BUMBLEBEE escapes to Earth to defend it against Decepticons. BUMBLEBEE loses his memory in a fight with completely random triple-changer Decepticons, so for most of this movie, he has no freakin idea what is going on. Eventually, he ends up running into Hailee Steinfeld (who plays Charlie and is known for PITCH PERFECT 2, 3, TRUE GRIT, and ENDERS GAME) after she jacks up his perfectly great hiding spot. Charlie is going through a lot and the character-driven dialog elements of this film help it stand out, as being at least better than several other installments in this series. Literal crying happened in the theater. The action is well done, but few and far between.

We do get some nostalgia, but not enough for fans who are just going to see that. Unless you just really freakin love partial clips of every ’80s song ever made playing in the background for 2 hours. This movie does have a lot to offer in spite of its terrible villain selection (when one appears right on screen but gets dismissed in seconds). Having said that, the ending gets it knocked down a point for blatant lack of attention to detail as if this entire movie happens in an alternate universe…or the rest of the series did.

Hailee is great in this and the parents are vast improvements over the Witwicky’s. I thought about giving this thing a 5 out of 7, but when I think about “re-watchabilty” (I know that is not a word) it’s going to end up a 4 out of 7.
