HOODWINKED! (2005)

HOODWINKED! (2005)

Back in 2005 we were kind of seeing the end of an era. Animators must have felt it because they released part 2 of just about everything classic animation that year. TARZAN II, BALTO II, MULAN II, LILO & STITCH 2 etc, etc. On top of that, KIM POSSIBLE’s first major movie was released, VALIANT, CHICKEN LITTLE, MADAGASCAR, THE PROUD FAMILY MOVIE, CORPSE BRIDE and more (so just a ton of animated projects). Most of this signaling the final days of traditional animation in theaters, and computer animation taking a huge leap forward. For me, out of all that, HOODWINKED stood out the most.

The story revolved around the mystery of why the heck was the big bad wolf at Granny’s house with Kirk “The Woodsman”  flying through the window? Who the heck is the Goody Bandit? Why was Granny tied up in the closet and what is with this damn nosey frog? Hoodwinked does a great job of telling each characters version of the events that led up to the frog’s interrogation. Each one has a wildly entertaining tale to tell making this movie one of the more interesting animated films out there at the time. Featuring voice talents from Anne Hathaway to Jim Belushi , this one features just enough laughs for kids and humor aimed at adults to make it a pretty awesome family flick. If I am not mistaken, you can catch this one for free on one of the major streaming services at the time of this review.

Animation wise you will notice a few glitches and it definitely doesn’t match today’s standards, but this is carefully covered with an engaging and fun script. I do think it’s likely the craziest character in THE SECRET LIFE OF PETS was inspired by one of the characters in this movie. In spite of all the good points here, HOODWINKED is not the standard by which all animation should be measured. As such it lands at a solid 4 out of 7.
