SUICIDE SQUAD (2016)
Checked this one out on Friday night in IMAX 3D. First off
let me say that this movie does not demand a 3D or IMAX treatment, but if you
like seeing 3D snow like I do, then go for it. There is a snow scene. The movie
in my estimation starts out pretty slowly with all the intro’s done in almost a
comic book style, but once the movie gets going it’s pretty freakin nuts.
It was good to see one of my favorite characters on the big screen “Katana” (played by Karen Fukuhara an actual martial arts champion), and Killer Croc was awesome. Jared Leto as the Joker is unfortunately the worst, I mean, the absolute worst. I kind of hoped they would have left him out of the movie entirely and that all the stuff we were seeing online was just a nightmare. Margo Robbie nails it as Harley Quinn and I would like to see more of the character but lets seriously give her some shorts that actually fit. I know Margo agrees. Deadshot played by Will Smith was fine, but I wish both this version and the version we see in the show ARROW would wear the cool mask he’s got a lot more often (last time I checked these were comic book properties).
David Ayer’s direction is a little slow, however I get the fact that most people probably have no idea what the backgrounds on the characters are etc. We do get some Batman and the lame new version of the Flash, but they both take back seats to the crazy villains (probably the best baddies we have seen in a while when it comes to comic book movies).
One thing I think this movie could have done better is the actual soundtrack. While it did feature a bunch of songs we know, it also felt like the dramatic action sequences could have been drummed up even more ala THE AMAZING SPIDERMAN 2. The last 40 minutes or so are basically what drives this film over the top for me into must buy territory.
