PONTYPOOL (2008)
Let me just start off by
saying PONTYPOOL is probably one of my favorite horror flicks of ALL TIME. Much
like a lot of the other stuff I have reviewed this year PONTYPOOL is a drastic
departure from your typical horror film. This movie is about a virus outbreak
that turns people into killer maniac zombies in the small town of PONTYPOOL
(which I know sounds familiar but it’s like nothing you’ve seen). I can’t
really say much more than that without ruining it. I will say this movie is 90%
dialog and is more of a thinking person’s horror flick than it is “I am just
killing you because you are having sex, doing drugs or accidentally murdered my
mom” horror.
How this movie unfolds and where it takes place only add to its
genius which undoubtedly by its nature will turn some people off. Any time you
make a really smart original movie you will have people that appreciate it for
what it is and people that will think it sucked. Unless its PROMETHEUS which
just sucked and wasn’t’ genius at all.
Anyway regarding this
review we get ridiculously strong performances from Stephen McHattie (A LITTLE
BIT ZOMBIE, THE TALL MAN), Lisa Houle (nothing I have seen) and Georgina Reilly
(MY BABYSITTER’S A VAMPIRE, HEARTLAND). For a truly psychological fear filled
wonder, PONTYPOOL is top notch pick. I give this film a 7 out of 7. Even the
credits are worth your time.
