HUMANOIDS FROM THE DEEP (1980)

Between Life and Death, There Is ... "Humanoids from the Deep"

Hold it! We think we know where these things come from, but we have no idea how many there are.

Also known as MONSTER (I think more so now because of the 1996 remake of this film) HUMANS FROM THE DEEP is just freakin nuts. Aside from DAGON (a movie I can’t recommend), HUMANOIDS is probably the most un-pc and “I don’t give a crap” of all the fish people movies.

The premise revolves around scientific experiments that go haywire (because that is all that seems to ever happen when scientists get involved in horror flicks) and now we have half-fish half crazy-looking creatures just trying to kill all the men and have sex with all the women they can find. Yeah- that is not a typo.

Aside from the mostly objectionable plot, this flick is just full-blown CGI-less horror effects at their best. This movie also utilizes what I can only describe as an ALIEN VS JAWS-like soundtrack which for the most part is extremely effective in giving this that campy feeling that makes this movie work. It’s also one of the only movies where you will see a guy catch a fish and get upset that it’s not some killing machine fish creature.

Ann Turkel (DEJAVU, THE FEAR) delivers a pretty strong performance given the elements and nature of this film as Dr. Susan Drake (especially the part where she just goes off on Edwards).  For horror fans, this is almost a must for your horror movie marathon. Roger Corman produced a lot of wonky horror flicks in his day, but man this thing is just over the top.

I give this thing a 6 out of 7. This movie could have been even better with a few elements left on the cutting room floor.
