HAUNT (2013)

HAUNT (2013)

Tagline: Nope

(Horror, Mystery, Really Dumb Kids) [R]

Your opinion of this movie is probably largely going to rely on what you want from your horror flicks. For me, I am just not all that much of a “haunted house” guy, but stories that are well done will win me over.

In this movie, a family moves into a house where they find a device that allows them to talk to the dead. The former owner left a lot of bizarre things in the house (not torture devices, just weird stuff). Anyway, the boy in the family Evan falls in love with this girl Sam mostly because he is a guy and she is a girl and they both have some bizarre need to contact ghosts.

It does not take long before crap goes haywire and there you have it. What is really lost in this film is any sort of development of the second-tier characters. Example: The younger daughter is telling the family in one scene after a huge scare that they should be friendly with the ghosts. Meanwhile, she is scratching the eyes out on a family portrait and no one bothers to follow up on that. Additionally, we get a really bizarre backstory about the lady that used to live there and how her husband cheated on her. Oddly this has very very little to do with what the heck these ghosts want with the new family? In fact, overall the plot holes are so big it takes away from this otherwise pretty well-done, well-acted, and overall creepy horror flick.

For some fans, one draw might be the billing of Ione Skye from SAY ANYTHING (a late 90’s actress that actually didn’t disappear but seemed to) but she really isn’t in this film enough. She is one of the parents in the movie who are treating the fact that their kids are freaking out and communicating with ghosts like she just found out they ate all the pizza. The movie also features the talents of Liana Liberato as Sam, Harrison Gilbertson as Evan, and Jacki Weaver as Janet.

Overall this thing gets a 3 out of 7. It's okay, but there is nearly nothing special about it.
