CARRIE (2013)
This is the remake of the 1976 Stephen King based classic
CARRIE. That one never really hit my “must-see” list, and to this day is
probably actually one of my least favorite King adaptations. If you are still
reading – I actually thought there were a number of things this one did really
really well. First off, if you are not already aware of this the movie is based
on a shy telekinetic young woman that has a lot of trouble making friends. I
say a lot of trouble, because the movie does point out that some people did
feel bad for things they did to her, and some people were genuinely
kind as well. For me this offered a balance to the film. Of course this doesn’t
make up for CARRIE’s freaky mother, extremely well played by Julianne Moore who
has this habit of taking roles Jodie Foster doesn’t end up doing.
I also thought it was
cool that both sides of the faith equation are offered in the film. So this
isn’t just out to bash Christianity….it’s out to bash whacky abusive parents
using scripture twisting in the name of religion to destroy their children.
Carrie’s view of faith in the film is actually quite a bit more loving in fact
and to that point it makes her an extremely likable character (as odd as that sounds). This allows us
to offer sentiments shared in the film at its crushing and disturbing ending.
We get some great secondary characters and there really isn’t much I didn’t
think was great about this thing. We also get a decent but not as solid
performance from Gabriella Wild (who plays Sue, but was also in THE THREE
MUSKETEERS back in 2011)
I will say some elements were pretty graphic and deal with
deeply dysfunctional and unhealthy issues. Not a great date movie but this
would be a great addition to your horror movie marathon. Is Chloe Grace Moretz
(who plays Carrie and is also known for LET ME IN, KICK ASS, IF I STAY, DARK
SHADOWS, THE EQUALIZER) the next dominant female force in Hollywood? Umm no, she made a bunch of dumpster fire movies after this.
