SATURDAY MORNING MYSTERY (2012) : 31 DAYS OF MADNESS.....

SATURDAY MORNING MYSTERY (2012)

Currently making the REDBOX circuit is this flick that has gone though a title change (most recently SATURDAY MORNING MASSACRE which a by far a more accurate title). I think at some point this film will become a bit of a cult classic but isn’t there yet. What it does though is successfully take THE FRIGHTENERS type of comedy to horror formula and brings this film to a bloody and yes freaky conclusion.

In this one Scooby-Doo-like team (down to the number of members and the dog) of paranormal investigators. They get hired to get to the bottom of a series of spooky events at the remote Kyser mansion where it is believed that kids “were” being taught ritualistic torture and satanism. Much like the Scooby Doo gang they mostly debunk ghost stories but this is not a ghost story, it’s all jacked out and the blood fest begins.

There are several un-settling aspects to this film that are actually detrimental to what I thought was a pretty decent idea at first. 1) There is a point in the film where the crew accidentally does acid. Not only does it lead to some bizarre visions and actions, it leads the movie down a completely un-necessary rabbit trail appealing to anyone just wanting to find a way to cram nudity in to this thing and make us completely dislike almost everyone in the crew. Yeah, it’s that stupid. 2) The transition from being calm cool and collected to totally frantic and hopeless takes a bit too many turns for me. Ashley Spillers does a great job in the role of Nancy (essentially Thelma if you are paring this up to Scooby Doo), but she goes from brave, to self aware, to scared out of her mind, to I am going to save the planet all in a few hours time. In most films this would work if done correctly, but it just feels off here. 3) The movie is a bit jaded on the relationship side. The Fred character Chad in the movie played by Adam Tate is so un-likable that you are kinda hoping he gets killed (in movie land to clarify for the pc crowd). Things I liked. The creepiness factor is pretty high and I liked the twists and turns in this which are extremely well done right up to the ending. Also Nancy was great as well as the humor in the first half of the film, most notably Officer Lance (Paul Gordon)

The group walks into the mansion and notices a pentagram made of sticks on the floor.

Nancy “do you know what kind of occult practices they are into?”
Officer Lance “Sticks on the floor I guess”.

There are some nice inventive moments in this but overall just enough garbage to ruin what could have been something great could be a 4 but, I give SATURDAY MORNING MYSTERY a 3 out of 7. Rating Definition – What? This movie was not what you expected. You can not decide if this movie was good or bad but you know there were a few redeemable qualities about it. If you can remember what they were, you might be talked into watch it again.
