TAMARA (2005)
Sometimes I watch a movie
and I almost dread doing the review, but I like the art of getting down my
thoughts enough to just push some of the more horrible reviews out. With this
movie that is not the case, in fact it’s the opposite. You can catch this on
Netflix streaming right now but most likely missed it when it came out because
it was basically direct to video (only appearing at 16 US theaters).
The story is simple
enough recluse turns to black magic for comfort (all the kids are doing it
apparently). She is accidentally killed (a prerequisite for horror movie
revenge) , comes back to life and she takes it out on everyone she can find
that was involved and a few that were abusive jerks that had it coming. You can
probably tell all of this from the poster.
Anyway we are given some pretty
decent efforts from almost everyone involved in this and quite frankly I was
caught a little off guard given the almost sure fire B status of this film. Claudette Mink (BATTLESTAR GALACTICA, FRINGE,
PAYCHECK) and Katie Stewart (WILD THINGS 2, GENERAL HOSPITAL) deliver pretty
memorable performances while the lead Tamara played by actress Jenna
Dewan-Tatum (AMERICAN HORROR STORY) seems a little un-comfortable playing a
seductress but does well enough.
Effects
and set wise this very low budget film also hits the mark in a lot of ways.
Walk into this one expecting THE FACULTY and you will be disappointed. Walk
into it expecting a mediocre forgettable film and you just might be surprised
as I was.
I give this film a solid 4 out of 7.
Rating definition : VERY GOOD This movie leaves you with that
feeling that although everything may not be okay, girls can kick butt and one
man can save the world with either one bullet left in the chamber some special
power he discovered 5 minutes ago. This movie is a good time and makes you
wonder how many people you can tell about its awesomeness the next day at work.
