DAWN OF THE DRAGON SLAYER (2011)
At some point in the 80’s
a lot of film makers got together and decided that fantasy movies would begin
to make their mark on the film industry. Some were more successful than others
but overall the standards and quality were pretty low. Sadly there are only a
few instances in dragon related movies where there has been a significant improvement.
REIGN OF FIRE probably being the standard of what you should shoot for effects
wise.
Then for some reason we
got to the SYFY era of movie making and some things just looked more and more
throw together. DAWN OF THE DRAGON SLAYER has a pretty decent premise as dragon
slayer movies go, but that is about all we have to work with.
When Will's (Richard
McWilliams) father is killed by a dragon, he starts his journey to kill it
while staying at a jerk of a tyrant name Sterling’s home. Will then falls in
love with Sterling’s daughter who is aptly played by the only actress trying in
this movie Nicola Posener (who is working on a bunch of crap right now). So now
he has the wrath of this tyrant coming down on him plus he’s gotta kill this
dragon, it’s just a lot of hard work, long hours, no benefits etc.
The dragon in this thing
looks great from far away, but up close it’s just a mess typical of the CGI you
see in most B-Movies. The dialog also drags on and on and makes the 90+ minute
running time feel like 15 hours, no 16. Director Anne K Black also wrote the
movie ORCS that came out the same year which was also largely considered a
B-movie gone wrong.
I
give this movie a 2 out of 7 but just barely. Rating Definition : 2 out
of 7 – EHH, this movie was not good and you know it. You kind of wish you
hadn’t paid to see it or allowed that chick in the deli to talk you into taking
her. Once the bad taste in your mouth is washed out, you won’t think this is
the worst movie ever, but you will think it was close.
