PERCY JACKSON: SEA OF MONSTERS (2013)
Three
years ago the first installment of this series hit us and to be honest I didn’t
fall in love with it right away. Despite outstanding performances from its
young cast, it didn’t really grow on me till about the 4th or 5th
viewing. Such is not the case with this stellar second helping. The gang is
back Percy Jackson, Annabeth Chase, Clarisse La Rue, and Tyson, his half-brother
(sort of it’s a long story), goes on a journey to the Sea of Monsters to
retrieve the Golden Fleece and save their camp whose powers of protection have
been weakened. It is likely this movie will not be touted at the big blockbuster of the summer maybe some thought it should be, however, it does stand on
its own and does exactly what it set out to do. While some of the story seemed
a bit un-even like the taxi cab portion of the movie, the rest landed punch
after punch in the entertainment department. We get some surprisingly well-rounded secondary characters that actually have us rooting for them by the end
of the movie. There is also an amazing few minutes with Nathan Fillion almost
worth watching the entire movie for.
There
are a few shortcuts taken with the CGI especially whenever a boat is getting
dragged or anything shot in too dark a lighting, but the daylight sequences are
very nicely done and the bull scene…holy cow. People that were expecting Lord
Of The Rings will be disappointed, but if you were looking for a well crafted
great time at the movies in a similar vein as the Narnia series, this one does
not disappoint.
Odd
– unless you watched part 1 you don’t know quite how diabolical Luke is. It may
have served this installment to dive into that a bit more. The taxi scene also
felt very borrowed from Harry Potter. Brandon T Jackson is one of the series
strongest performers but was benched for a lot of this one. I guess that is how
the book went but I would have tried to find a way to get him more screen time.
Great
– Most of the time Logan Lerman or Alexandra Daddario (who should be the next Wonder
Woman in my opinion) show up on screen you get freaking epicness.
I should also
point out that as much as I disliked the character Leven Rambin ( THE HUNGER
GAMES, ONE TREE HILL) held her own.
