PRETTY IN PINK (1986)
This movie was a giant in its day and to most still holds a
lot of sentimental value. For Molly Ringwald fans there probably isn’t a better
flick unless you consider MALICIOUS somehow "amazing" (if you seen it you will know why I brought that up). Just a year after SIXTEENCANDLES and BREAKFAST CLUB, PRETTY IN PINK was essentially the swan song for
the 80’s coming of age era (many would throw in SAY ANYTHING (1989)).
The cast even by
today’s standards is freaking amazing. Annie Potts (GHOSTBUSTERS), James Spader
(BOSTON LEGAL, STARGATE), Andrew “Dice” Clay, Margaret Colin (INDEPENDENCEDAY), Gina Gershon (everything), Dweezil Zappa (THE RUNNING MAN), Kristy
Swanson (BUFFY THE VAMPIRE SLAYER), Andrew McCarthy (MANNEQUIN, WEEKEND AT
BERNIES, THE SPIDERWICK CHRONICLES) and on and on. Basically the movie involved
Andie trying to decide between two guys in her life. I wish there was more to
it but throw in a batch of stars and that was enough for a classic back then.
Okay so 2 things you didn’t notice about this movie the
18,000 times you saw it. 1) Every actual band that plays on stage in the movie
sucks (no the prom doesn’t count). Every other song was either a timeless hit
or a one hit wonder. 2) Kristy Swanson dances with one of the main actors in
the movie and shows up in MANNEQUIN TOO : ON THE MOVE (1991), just missing
co-star Andrew McCarthy who only thought it was important to date a MANNEQUIN
once. Everyone knows this, but this movies soundtrack alone is worth playing
the movie multiple times just for background noise.
Outside of a few out-dated lines of comedy, this movie is essentially a straight up coming of age movie. Back then John Hughes knew exactly how to write an 80's movie and even how to make one based loosely on a Psychedelic Furs song. Due to it's cast, soundtrack, writing and nostalgia...
