OZ THE GREAT AND POWERFUL (2013)

OZ THE GREAT AND POWERFUL (2013)

So I had a lot of excitement about this one. The previews especially looked amazing. Unfortunately almost from the very start, I was disappointed. We all know OZ by now, not so great and powerful, but with a playground of ideas and an entire world already built in, I am bummed at the lack of creativity here. The twists and turns provided by the same crew that worked on SPIDERMAN swings and almost completely misses here.  I am NOT going to go as far as to say that there were not some decent elements. The ending in particular at least brought me out of the coma I’d slipped into during the first 2 hours.

Michelle Williams is dynamic and does an amazing job in her role as Annie. To be honest I was a fan of James Franco as well in this thing, he does a commendable job as Oz, having said that almost everyone else was under used or cast poorly. I should also make it clear that much of the cast I normally really like (Milla Kunis, Bruce Campbell and Ted Raimi for that matter).

Stumbling through set up dialog for the end of the movie I honestly didn’t get a real sense of why Theodora was so completely bent out of shape. Girls loose guys all the time and don’t decide to freak the freak out. Oh no, wait, I guess sometimes they do. I can see where people would enjoy this ride but I found it largely lack luster and hardly worth the promotion effort Disney put into it.

SINBAD on the SyFy channel is doing a better job in the sets and design department right now than I feel like this movie did. For at least bringing us back to OZ, I give this movie a 3 out of 7.
