A GOOD DAY TO DIE HARD (2013)
So I have had time to let
this one set in and I’ve heard all the bad reviews. So not letting the dust
settle on my own thoughts I decided to check this one out first hand, then write the review quickly afterward. For one
of the first times in a long time, what I witnessed from this installment in
this storied series can only be described as a complete and absolute failure. A
few nights before this, I was told by someone that this movie drops the ball on
everything we loved about the first 4 movies. I could not agree more.
The only
thing even mildly right about this movie was the casting of Bruce Willis to
play his iconic role of John McClane and the re-casting of his daughter Lucy
played by Mary Elizabeth Winstead who inexplicably is given about 3 minutes of
screen time in the entire film. In the extended version for some damn reason, it's even less than that.
Based in Russia McClane is trying to help his son Jack (who turns out to be a well trained CIA agent) stop a nuclear weapons heist (yes the same plot you see in about 70% of action movies put out by Hollywood these days). The plot as a whole worked great in the ’80s but these days you kinda have to switch it up a bit when picking bad guys (ie, it can’t always be the Russians, for the most part, that ship has sailed in the "originality" department).

While LIVE FREE DIE HARD
in my opinion was the best of the series, this one is by far the worst. Had
this been part of the TAKEN series I would have been a lot more forgiving, just
because the style and camera work was a lot closer to what we expect in those
films (not the plot mind you). If you are a fan of the
series you are obligated to see this. There are also some decent chase scenes
and the ending is pretty satisfying action-wise overall. If you are not a fan,
then run, this will only ruin your opinion of one of the best action franchises
in recent cinematic history.
